For a long time, I have been watching.
The first time an ancestor came to me, I had not asked for anything. I had recently moved home to the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw after a long time away, and one night I had a dream.
In it I was standing at my living room window very early in the morning, woken by prayer being chanted in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh outside, and when I looked down at the street there was an old woman standing there in a dark grey woven shawl, so long it dragged on the ground around her feet. I barely knew the language then, so I didn’t understand what she was saying and she never once looked up at me, but when I woke I knew I had travelled to the spirit world, and that I would be protected in my work and in my community.
I couldn’t tell you her name. My Auntie Jackie told me later that she may have been welcoming us home.
What took me much longer to learn is that you don’t have to wait to be visited. You can go looking.
I recorded this visualisation because everyone deserves a way to get anchored when life is chaotic, and because nobody should have to spend years working out that they were allowed to ask for guidance.
